During an initial phone interview,  questions about the various programs the Clinic has to offer will be answered, and the patient will be directed to the Marietta Weight Loss Clinic's web site:  (www.MaWLC.com).

After scheduling an appointment, the subsequent office consultation with the Medical Director consists of a review of:

  • Recent, pertinent blood laboratory results

  • Urinalysis

  • EKG

  • Pulse and blood pressure

  • Respiratory rate

An obesity-directed medical history is recorded and a physical exam is performed to:

  • Determine the relative risk status based on overweight and obesity parameters.

  • Identify those at very high absolute risk. The following diseases have a very high absolute risk  with a need for intense risk-factor modification and management  diseases present:

    • Established coronary heart disease (CHD),

    • Presence of other atherosclerotic diseases,

    • Type 2 diabetes (fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, or 2-h post-prandial plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL),

    • Sleep apnea. Symptoms and signs include very loud snoring or cessation of breathing during sleep, which is often followed by a loud clearing breath, then brief awakening.

  • Identify other obesity-associated diseases/risk factors:

    • Hypertension (systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg) or current use of antihypertensive agents.

    • High-risk low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (serum concentration ≥ 160 mg/dL). A borderline high-risk LDL-cholesterol (130 to 159 mg/dL) plus two or more other risk factors also confers high risk.

    • Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (serum concentration < 35 mg/dL).

    • Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (fasting plasma glucose between 110 and 125 mg/dL).

    • Family history of premature CHD (myocardial infarction or sudden death experienced by the father or other male first-degree relative at or before 55 years of age, or experienced by the mother or other female first-degree relative at or before 65 years of age).

    • Age ≥ 45 years for men or age ≥ 55 years for women (or postmenopausal).

    • Cigarette smoking.

  • Measure height, total body weight, fat weight, fat-free weight, % body fat, total body water.

  • Measure waist, hip, neck, arm, and thigh circumferences.

  • Measure skin-fold subcutaneous fat deposits:

    • Arm - Biceps, Triceps, Pectoral

    • Upper and lower abdomen and Iliac areas

    • Medial and anterior supra-patellar areas

    • Sub-scapular and renal areas

    • All of these measurements are then followed at monthly follow-up exams.

  • Calculate Body Mass Index (BMI) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).

  • All of these measurements are then followed at monthly follow-up exams.

  • Recommend an individualized treatment plan based on the Risk Factors, measurements, medical history, and healthy, reasonable goals.

    • This individualized plan may include:

      • FDA approved appetite suppressants

      • Hormone and vitamin injections

      • Vitamin and/or nutriceutical supplements

      • Diet prescription with specific caloric content

      • Meal replacement, snack, and meal supplement food products

      • Physical therapy evaluation with an exercise prescription
